A Future for THRIVE

A new headquarters for THRIVE Peninsula is in the works! We are relocating our operations to expand our services as we continue to work to address the extreme need we're seeing for our services. We've outgrown our facility. Over the past 5 years we've seen record growth and yet the demand rises and consistently we’re only able to help about 10% of the requests for help. 2023 Marks our 50th year serving our Peninsula Community and we couldn't find a more suitable way to celebrate than furthering our outreach and expanding our services.
Some of the features to look forward to at our new location will include:
The Market at THRIVE - A FREE Marketplace, the first of its kind in our area. It will look and feel like a market and will be a dignifying shopping experience, open to everyone.
A dedicated Financial Wing - A professional space allowing clients and coaches a dedicated space to learn to take transformative steps towards a more stable future.
A Raised Bed Garden - A nourishing place for our community to learn and GROW.
A Community Engagement space for outreach, education, work groups, meetings, and socials.
And a Free Bookstore in partnership w/REACH, inc. Families will have the opportunity to "shop" for new children's books. Our goal is to raise $1 Million dollars to fully fund the purchase and renovation. This will ensure that our resources stay completely committed to the mission of serving our community.
THRIVE Peninsula is purchasing the property from Boys and Girls Club of the VA Peninsula. However, the Boys and Girls Club will share the property leasing back a portion of the building and will continue to offer their services to about 50 children for afterschool and summer childcare.

What is the capital campaign project? A new headquarters for THRIVE Peninsula will relocate our operations to expand our services and will include: The Market at THRIVE - A FREE Marketplace, the first of its kind in our area. It will look and feel like a market and will be a dignifying shopping experience, open to everyone. When do you expect the project will be complete? Once we close on the purchase of the property the contractor estimates 3 months for construction and renovation and then, we will work with community and church partners to paint, install flooring, landscape, and accomplish other final touches. Then we will move-in. Our current projection is late summer 2023.
Why is this project necessary? We’ve vastly outgrown our current facility, and with more space we will be able to expand our food distribution to more people. Providing them nutritious options with dignity and personal choice that you enjoy at a grocery store. Grow our own food. Expand program outreach for financial assistance and education. Offer a dedicated space for community connection, and so much more. Since moving into our current facility in XXXX food insecurity has remained a demonstrated concern for our community only exacerbated by the pandemic and its economic ramifications. Over the course of 5 years, we’ve more than tripled our food assistance yet the demand rises and consistently we’re only able to help about 10% of the requests for help. In 2022, THRIVE Peninsula served 18,011 people through the distribution of 380,234 pounds of food from our pantry and $540,225 invested through our financial assistance programs. All in the name of our mission to stabilize households and serve people in crisis. We do this with the aid of 80 Church Partners, a growing list of Community Organizations and Businesses. And the strength and dedication of 100 weekly volunteers who logged 15,641 hours of service in 2022. 1 in 10 Virginians- the ratio of people who face fear and pain of hunger. Totaling 55,000 people across the Peninsula.
How will this change THRIVE Peninsula? The Market at THRIVE will give us space to increase food distribution adding back the shopping experience for our clients but also maintain our pre-pack and delivery programs. We will prioritize healthy choice options. The additional space will include a walk-in fridge/freezer, allow us to utilize more food rescue, and store more shelf stable items and dry goods. In 2022 we served over 16,000 people from our pantry. We estimate within the first year serving 30,000 in our new space. The Raised Bed Garden will allow us opportunity to grow seasonal produce and educate. A dedicated Financial Wing allows space for private financial counseling, elevating our services with a dignified focus for our financial clients to take transformative steps towards a stable future. The Community Engagement space will house a collaborative workspace, and allow us room for community outreach, education, work groups, meetings, and socials. Further, we are excited about the opportunity to partner w/REACH, inc. to offer a Free Bookstore to our clients. This will give families access to free children’s books and promote the love and joy of reading. These are just some of the premier upgrades we are excited about. There are many more thoughtful details and additions we’re incorporating. Like a separate volunteer entrance and upgrades to the volunteer appreciation station. The addition of a refrigerated box truck to boost our capacity to collect large scale provisions and stock the Market.

When will in-person shopping return? Since 2020 we have not had in-person shopping as an option for our community. We have successfully met the rising demand out of our pantry with the efficient planning and patience of our dedicated staff and volunteers. We very much look forward to opening the doors at The Market at THRIVE! The Market will the first of its kind on the Peninsula and will allow for clients to come, select their own items just like they would at a grocery store -but, for free! We are working with our partners at Food Lion and a group of professional advisors to organize the shopping experience with fresh, healthy foods at the forefront.
What sort of volunteer projects do you have? For 50 years we’ve celebrated growth and opportunity thanks to our community of dedicated volunteers. This project will be successful because once again we will rally together to build, refurbish, and replenish the new space. This is a big undertaking. Though we are working with a contractor for the major work, we are currently recruiting skilled labor to address some of the renovation and remodeling projects. We then will be enlist groups to accomplish projects like, painting, landscaping, cleaning, set-up and moving. Interested in getting involved? Contact Angela @ 757-877-6211 ext. 3
